Important Information:
- HOW STARTING POSITIONS WILL BE DETERMINED: Chess960 is a chess variant where the back row of each player's pieces is randomly shuffled. There are 960 legal starting positions. We will draw a number randomly from 1 to 960 at the beginning of each round; the number will correspond to one of the numbers in the following document: https://chess960.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/chess960-starting-positions.pdf. Starting position documents will be provided so you don't need to bring your own, but you can practice with the positions in the link.
- If you show up after check-in time, you may miss games.
- We will supply boards and pieces. We do not supply clocks, so please make sure to download a chess clock app on your phone before you arrive.
- Touch Move: Once a piece is touched with intent to move, that piece must be moved and if moving that piece would be illegal, then this counts as an illegal move.
- Illegal Moves: If a player makes an illegal move and the opposing player does not declare it before moving and pressing their clock, the illegal move stands and is un-penalized. If the opposing player declares it before moving and pressing their clock, the guilty player (who made the illegal move) loses (EXCEPTION FOR CASTLING as it can confuse people who are new to Chess960; see below).
- CASTLING: Castling has the same requirements as in regular chess (no pieces between king and rook; king cannot castle out of, through, or into check; king and rook may not have previously moved). When castling, the king and rook land on the same squares as they would in regular chess regardless of where they started, e.g. when castling on the right, White king lands on g1 and White rook lands on f1. If a player castles incorrectly and this is pointed out by the other player, the player who castled should undo the move and play a legal one.
- Draws: It is not necessary to write down your moves. Therefore, there is no 50-move draw.
- Check: No need to call check.
- Etiquette: Please do not use electronics during games.
- Please be quiet during games.
